Young Macanese Keep Their Home-grown Language Alive Through Plays and Music
Have you heard of Patuá? It is Macau’s own creole language that blends Portuguese with Cantonese and words borrowed from many other Asian languages. It goes back centuries, developing during the city’s time as a Portuguese trading outpost.
But in more recent years, Patuá almost went extinct. Luckily, a younger generation of Macanese have come together to preserve this unique part of their mixed Portuguese-Chinese heritage.
They include scholar Elisabela Larrea, who is using theatre, among other mediums, to raise awareness of the language. There is also Delfino Gabriel, an amateur musician who creates songs that use Patuá in the lyrics. Through their shared mission to keep Patuá alive, both of these Macau locals are forging deeper connections with their culture and community.

I’m from the Philippines and I’m sure it’s widely known that the Spanish have colonized us for over 300 years. A lot of the dishes here are also a fusion of Chinese, Spanish & Malay or more Southeast Asian flavors. My grandma used to cook this dish called Arroz Ala Cubana , which I’m not sure if it’s a purely Spanish dish or if it’s fusion, but it reminds me of what I saw in your video. It’s fried rice with minced meat, diced potatoes, raisins and people usually eat it with fried bananas on the side.

It is similar to anchovis where I put a few of them in pasta and let it melt. Although the Cantonese salted fish has more pronounced flavor and you need less to mix into a dish. I personally prefer the dry variant.

I’m Chinese and I find this aspect of our culture pretty disgusting. There is definitely some truth in “we eat everything.” It’s true. We eat stuff that other races don’t. There is nothing I’ve heard of Chinese people not eating. You name it, we’ve eaten it. The explanations I find most plausible are the lack of religion governing our diets and our obsession with traditional medicine. Many chinese are famously non religious, and their thirst for traditional medicine (which have no scientific proof and serve only to drive animals to extinction) causes them to ingest literally the most horrifying things.

Whilst Philippine cuisine and Macanese cuisine fight over the title of "Asia's first fusion cuisine", Peranakan food enters the chat and beats us both soundly by TWO HUNDRED MORE YEARS. Philippine cuisine is only older than Macanese cuisine by a decade or so?
